Tryout information

The Tomball Kings welcome new student-athletes to all of our baseball programs, but eligibility for play on a Tomball Kings baseball team is limited to homeschooled student-athletes.

During periods outside of scheduled tryouts, we welcome prospective players to contact us to schedule an individual tryout.

Prospective participants may wish to read our guide “How to make the most of your baseball tryout.”

We require advance registration for all tryout participants. Registration is currently open for tryout dates in November (high school only), December (10U and 8U), and January (high school, 15U, and 12U). Each of these is for play in the Spring 2023 season.

Tryout location

We hold all tryouts at Farm League Park, 19717 Stuebner Airline Road, Spring TX 77379 [map]. Please note that participants may not wear metal spikes on any Farm League field.

Tryout rules and implications for high school players

No high school player may try out for a fall team only.

At the August tryout, a high school player will be considered for:

  • 15U fall (if age-eligible)
  • 18U fall (if age-eligible) and high school spring
  • High school spring only (if not desiring to play fall baseball)

Any high school player who is offered only a 15U fall roster position has no assurance of being on a spring team. He must tryout again either (i) in November for the high school spring program or (ii) in January, for either the 15U league play or high school interscholastic play.

At the November tryout, high school players will be considered for the spring interscholastic play only.

Eligibility for November high school practices is by invitation only. Invitations may be extended to high school or select 15U players.

At the January tryout, a high school player will be considered for:

  • 15U spring (if age-eligible)
  • High school spring

Tryout format

At each tryout we separate participants by age division, but we use an evaluation and grading system that is uniform across all ages, to help us track player development over time. We evaluate punctuality, baseball appearance and demeanor, focus and energy, general athleticism, throwing ability, infield and outfield defensive skills, and hitting. We reserve time toward the end of each tryout for separate evaluations of prospective pitchers and catchers. We grade each activity using a five-point scale and make qualitative notes, as well. Though player evaluations are the primary function of our tryouts, we will take time to share teaching points whenever possible.

Tryout results

Typically within 72 hours of a tryout’s conclusion, we will share our evaluations with each participant. We do not share actual, numeric grades from the player evaluations, but do provide a qualitative assessment along with one of two, definitive, tryout results. These results will be either (a) a qualified invitation to participate as a player in one of our age divisions or (b) our regrets that we are unable to extend an invitation at that particular moment in time.

The term “qualified invitation” means an invitation to join a Kings program that is predicated on certain terms, conditions, and understandings. These include player availability for team events as scheduled, timely payment of required fees, and compliance with program rules.
