Under the guidance of coaches Kevin Beirne and Tres Barrera, Tomball Kings pitchers and catchers are getting ready for the Spring 2025 high school baseball season with weekly training sessions at the Premier Baseball of Texas Sports Complex. Spring training for the high school Kings opens January 20, 2025.

Eleven pitchers are working under the guidance of Coach Beirne, led by seniors Logan Guinn, Nathan Kenjalo, Mike Sharp, and Jackson Young. Also working toward innings on the mound this spring will be juniors Hayden Cain and AJ Rocha, sophomore Carson Riippa, and freshmen Asher Chapa, Jonah Irvine, Taven Oluwa, and Jaxon Ziegler.

Pitching coach Kevin Beirne works from freshman infielder and pitcher Asher Chapa on December 3, 2024 at Premier.

Coach Beirne is a former two-sport athlete at Texas A&M—football and baseball—who went on to nine years as a professional baseball pitcher. He pitched in Major League Baseball for the Chicago White Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, and Los Angeles Dodgers before finishing his professional career under Bobby Valentine in Japan. He serves as coach with the National Pitching Association and an Associate Scout for the Kansas City Royals organization.

Coach Barrera still plays professionally and just returned from serving on the Mexican national team in November, for whom he homered in the Premier12 international tournament. He played college baseball for the University of Texas. His professional career commenced in 2016 when he was drafted by the Washington Nationals. In addition to playing for the Nationals in Major League Baseball, he has played for the St. Louis Cardinals. He was signed to earlier this year to the Toros de Tijuana in the Mexican League and will play again for the Toros during its 2025 season.

Coach Barrera is working hard to ready a group of six Kings catchers—two sophomores the oldest among them—for the upcoming varsity and junior varsity seasons. The Kings have been strong behind the plate for the past four years, with both Vince Herrera and Breck Romero moving on to college baseball after graduation. Their replacement is yet to be named, but sophomores Brennan Zarro and Steven Bailey have both made great strides, followed closely by freshmen Gabriel Turner, Trout Wirt, Barrett Eads, and Rusian Anderson.

With forty-four games on the spring 2025 varsity schedule, the Kings will need a consistent effort from a strong and healthy group of pitchers and catchers to achieve their goals, and are grateful to Coaches Beirne, Barrera, and the players for their off-season work and dedication.
