Tomball Kings Will Become Newton Prep
Beginning with the coming academic year, we will cease competing as the Tomball Kings and begin competing as Newton Prep.
Under the new structure, we intend to operate as an educational charitable organization and seek recognition as a 501(c)(3), allowing us to accept tax-deductible contributions in support of an expanded mission. That expanded mission will include academics and arts, and will serve girls as well as boys.
We have begun migrating content to our new website at newtonprep.org. We will continue to maintain the Kings website indefinitely in an archived form for historical and search-engine purposes.
Your bookmarks of Tomball Kings web pages will continue to work on the new site, as will your email subscription to program news.
Newton Prep will carry forward the history, records, and accomplishments of Tomball Kings athletes and teams.
We went through a similar transition in 2019, from the Tomball Christian Warriors baseball program to the Tomball Kings. In retrospect, we probably should have anticipated even then that we would eventually outgrow a geographically specific name and a structure focused primarily on athletics.
Several recurring and emerging realities made it clear that this transition was necessary.
- Families regularly ask whether they must live in Tomball to participate.
- We want meaningful opportunities for girls to participate, and “Kings” is not an ideal mascot for girls teams.
- Many younger families are now located north and west of our original geographic center.
- Operating as a charitable educational organization will greatly improve our ability to support existing programs and develop new ones.
- Interest in home schooling and alternative educational models has expanded dramatically.
- Public schools, private schools, sports academies, and tournament organizations increasingly compete for home-schooled athletes.
- We believe there is a real opportunity to encourage rigorous academics — particularly in science and mathematics — while remaining authentically home-school-centered.
- Many sports organizations now openly market “academic lite” approaches. We believe families are looking for something more serious and more complete.
The post “Welcome Tomball Kings” on the new website will do a better job of explaining our broader vision for Newton Prep, but we wanted to share with you here some of the more practical considerations that led us to realize this transition made sense.
We also expect expanded opportunities for coaching and teaching under the new structure. We will continue our collaboration with Lone Star College, while also encouraging parents and members of the community to offer courses and programs in areas where they have expertise or interest. By way of example, we expect offerings in music, dance, horsemanship, expanded athletics offerings, and traditional academic subjects in the coming year.
Our first programs as Newton Prep will be our summer baseball camps beginning June 2. We will also announce summer football camps shortly.
Thank you for the support you have shown for Tomball Kings over the years. We look forward to continuing this work together under the Newton Prep banner.
